VIDEO: Som Tam (ส้มตำ) and Gai Yang (ไก่ย่าง) – The Ultimate Thai Combo Meal

By Mark Wiens 8 Comments

When it comes to Thai food (or any food for that matter), one of the greatest combinations is Som Tam (ส้มตำ) and Gai Yang (ไก่ย่าง).

Som tam is Thai green papaya salad, it’s sweet and sour, fresh and crispy. Gai yang is grilled chicken, it’s juicy, lightly salty, and always served with a chili dipping sauce. The duo, along with sticky rice, makes for one of the world’s most satisfying lunches.

Thank you for watching!

    Hey Mark,
Curious to know where you ate this delicious meal, I’ll be visiting Thailand very soon and would love to check this place out. Love your videos and your website! Thanks Mark!

I am not sure if we were able to taste this in Thailand, but we will definitely try this out when we get to Thailand again early next year! Thanks for the tip! And the chicken looks awesome. Got me really hungry there.

I always get your video posts on a Sunday evening when I have hunger pangs and I know I can not get these dishes instantly! It’s mental and gastronomic torture! I really love Som Tam but have never been able to find green papaya anywhere in London – they are always the supermarket yellow variety in the UK. I shall have to befriend a local Thai restaurant and ask around. Same goes for the gorgeous Thai basil (is that also known as holy basil?). There must be some specialised Asian supermarkets over here.

I pity your wife filming these videos (if it is her) – she must be gagging at the bit whilst you devour all that food! Not leaving anything for her!

I assume that your wife cooks Thai food at home. It would be great to see some instructional videos.

    Keep eating!

Hello Mark, great to hear from you and thank you so much for watching my videos. Thai basil is more like sweet basil, but holy basil is a different kind, more peppery. I’m in the process right now of putting together some recipe videos, and hopefully a recipe guide in the future too! Thanks again for all your support.
