Borobudur Temple, Indonesia

Location: Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia

Among a host of awesome things to do and see in Indonesia, the ancient Borobudur temple near Yogyakarta on the island of Java was one of my most memorable impressions.

Different from the Angkor Wat temple complex, Borobudur is an single standing fortress that looks like a square castle with multiple layers stacked on top of each other.

In an ancient ritual, followers are intended to walk around each level of the Borobudur temple, symbolical of the Buddhas path to enlightenment.

The view from the top was spectacular.

      Hey Kirk,
I can’t remember exactly the distance it is to follow the path around the temple, but I think it’s somewhere around 4 – 5 km. The guide is going good so far, it’s been a great learning process as well!

Sounds funny, but ever since I played that Geochallenge game on FB, I have been wanting to go to Borobudur! The name was so intriguing. Thanks for the picture, it looks amazing!

they say it’s even more magnificent when enjoyed at sunrise.

      Hey Vira,
I wasn’t there for sunrise, but I was there at sunset one day, and it was truly magnificent – though it might be better at sunrise. It’s an all around beautiful temple.
