The Peaceful Shores of Volcanic Lake Toba

Off a 5 hour chaotic bus from Medan, Indonesia, I arrived at Parapat on the shores of Lake Danau Toba. This North Sumatran lake is the largest volcanic lake in the world. The ferry from the mainland to the small town of Tuktuk on the peninsula of Samosir (have a look at the maps), in the lake, took another half an hour by ferry.

Immediately as we floated through the tame, deep water of Toba on the ferry, I could sense calmness and relaxation. From a previous recommendation, I decided to stay at Reggae Guest House, proving to be a wonderful budget accommodation. For 3 days, a friend and I payed just US $3 together for a bungalow overlooking the lake. This was the view from the door…

Tuktuk is an extremely pleasant little town. People are relaxed, the food is good, and basically all the wonderful things in Sumatra apply. We were able to eat some scrumptious nasi campur, rice served with various meats, vegetables, and of course chilies.

There are a number of activities to explore near and around Lake Toba. North Sumatra is home to the Batak people who have an intersting culture, history, and architectural style. The culture is evident and can be observed through various sites around Samosir Island. Hot springs, small ponds, and hikes are also great things to do in the Toba region.

Despite various options of what to do, I would recommend ultra-relaxation when visiting Lake Toba. I have been to few places as peaceful, quiet, and tranquil as Lake Toba.
Bring a book, a swim suit, and not much else.

That just looks awesome! Cool spot!
Oh man – Lake Toba! I forgot how idyllic it looks there, my picture CD from a trip in early 2003 was destroyed when getting wet. Time to go again and make some new photos!
For me the most amazing thing about Lake Toba is that Samosir island is almost as big as Singapore with its 4 Million people.
waw….the beautiful picture of lake toba. i will be there soon.

Cool! Went there almost 20 years ago and now planning a short trip there. Really hoping the hotels there are not too run down -since this is a family trip. I’m sure we’ll enjoy the weather there!
It is one of the most relaxing places I have been to. Looking around the Samosir peninsula there appeared to be some pretty decent accommodation. Have a wonderful time with your family!
